RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (July 16, 2024) – Aggregate, concrete and other construction materials have dominated the beds of dump trucks and flatbeds at the construction site of TMC Transportation’s future terminal off Shop Road. However, that’s soon to change as the company is on target to complete its new campus by early 2025.
The premier flatbed carrier announced in December 2023 plans to expand its regional headquarters facility in Richland County, South Carolina, effectively consolidating multiple sites within the community into one 44-acre campus. The company wasted no time getting started on construction and has progressed quickly over the past months with the support of numerous eager contractors and community supporters.
Jason Webb, TMC’s Executive Vice President of Asset Management, says that the new terminal offers TMC an opportunity to bring together multiple aspects of its operations that have been housed throughout the Columbia area.
“We’ve had a presence in South Carolina for more than 25 years, but it’s been distributed across several locations. Now we will be consolidating all of our operations in one campus. We’re excited about the opportunities for collaboration and greater efficiency.”
When completed, the new terminal will include training facilities for new drivers, office space for logistics and operations personnel, a driver lounge, and a state-of-the-art air-conditioned maintenance facility that will serve TMC drivers throughout the Southeast.
Webb believes that the new terminal’s Richland County location is ideal for several reasons.
“Geographically, we’re right where we want to be—in the heart of the trucking industry, with several major interstates nearby, and close to many of our most important business partners. Plus, it’s an area where we already have great relationships with local governments, with a strong workforce. Partnering with Richland County has given us an opportunity to grow our business in a community that offers everything we’re looking for.”
TMC Transportation’s $38 million investment will also inject 185 new positions into the job market. With the increasing importance of logistics and supply chain management, career opportunities provided by companies like TMC Transportation are invaluable to the continued growth of communities. The company will hire not only drivers at the new terminal but also office staff, maintenance technicians, and logistics and operations personnel.
Webb believes that the new Columbia terminal will benefit both TMC and Richland County tremendously.
“Since its founding in 1972, TMC has always strived to be a force for good in our communities, and we see the new terminal as a chance to do just that. It will allow us to not only expand our business, but also provide good jobs in the community and strengthen the supply chain in South Carolina. Transportation is truly a growth industry, and since TMC is employee-owned, we all benefit as the company succeeds—as we believe the new terminal will allow us to do.”
Once operational, the terminal will boost TMC Transportation’s service capacity throughout the Southeastern U.S. and serve as a hub for driver training, truck maintenance, and fleet management, with industry-leading facilities to maximize operational efficiency. With more than 25 years in Richland County, and double that nationally, the company anticipates that the terminal on Shop Road will expand its reach into the Southeast and further cement its reputation as a leader in flatbed transportation.
